If you are like me you start well in advance looking for gift ideas
for the upcoming holidays. Yes, I know its still months away but
it never fails to sneak up on us way to fast. One thing I know
my kids love and I can never go wrong with is new games! I love
discovering new companies where I can get a new variety of games
added to our ever growing stash that are fun and different than
what we already have. We have had so much fun this summer
gathered around the table talking and doing puzzles or playing
games we were sent from Winning Moves. When the weather is
just to hot out to enjoy and the kids are complaining they are
bored, I always know how to cheer them up and keep the fits to
a minimum by keeping their minds and hands busy.
Recently we decided to attack the 500 piece puzzle. Not all the kids
were interested in sitting down to work on a puzzle so four of us girls
got to work and had alot of fun. It was great to talk and just spend
some quality time together working on it. The first puzzle we did
was this adorable Penguin Family Puzzle. My oldest daughter
absolutely loves penguins and couldn't wait to get it all together!
We love the uniqueness of Pastime Puzzles and the whimsy cutouts
they include making for a fun guessing game as well as more of a
challenge to the build. All kinds of fun shapes and letters to discover.
We spent an hour or so picking out the edges and putting it together
before taking a lunch break, It came together well and all the girls
ages 8-11 did great with it. We normally like to put large puzzles on
a large board or cardboard so it can be moved if we needed additional
time or days to complete them but this time we didn't and left it there
for two days to work on as we felt. When the kids had friends over
and the puzzle was still in the way with about 20% left to complete they
took it apart and put it away and sadly I didn't get any more pictures
of the completed progress..looks like we need to pull it out again soon!
The quality is great and sturdy, the pieces don't bend and break
like some and the picture by Linda Thompson is super adorable!
The finished puzzle covers a 18" x 24" area. It would be fun to
glue or frame for decor in a bedroom or playroom!
When it comes to games..my kids all get excited and
all want to play. Especially if its something new..
was a huge hit and they have pulled it out now
multiple times this summer with friends over and
on our annual cousins day to share the fun.Depending on the way the pig lands when you roll it...
like you would a dice, it determines how many points
you get. Everyone in the groups attempts to match the
card that starts off the game. Each card has different
pictures of the pigs in different poses they need to match.
If you get the pose right on the first attempt, you get to
gather all the pigs to determine your points.
Its a fun game full of giggles just because the kids like
to joke and be silly with the pigs and try to beat each other.
They have also tried to add their own spin to the game with
stacking the pigs in the order and pose they are in on the
card shown. They tease each other and make pig noises
and just have fun with it.
store all the additional pieces so you can minimize the chance
for lost parts.
The second game they sent us that's new for 2013 is called 5ive Straight.
Another huge success in entertaining the half a dozen as they get into
teams and work together as siblings and have fun!
A popular game, in a newer version to bring back the excitement.
With this game, the lower your card the better variety you can
choose as long as its the number on your card or higher.
Your goal is for your team to get five in a row. Each team or player
starts off with four cards, from there you have to play a card and
decide where you want to place your peg, if you choose not to
play your turn or peg you can choose a card instead. It gets pretty
challenging as the board fills up.
Their favorite part is when you get a challenge...for example when
you need five in a row with your team but all the pegs are in a low number.
If the partner got 7 they can go anyplace higher... but if you drew a 70
they wouldn't know and you would have to go higher than 70 and you
would be farther apart, they have learned the key is to go middle to try to
give them a better chance at helping their team mate.
Its a fun interactive game where they can work together to try to
beat the other teams. Its also great for the younger kids to practice
numbers and learning what comes before/after a number to keep
their number memory sharp. Its been great for my younger kids to
get their minds thinking numbers again just before school starts back
up. It may not seem like much but its amazing how it helps. Its been
another game my kids have all enjoyed and often ask each other to play.
We love games for gift giving. Its always a great family gift
when the budget for outgoing gifts to friends and family is a bit
tight. Instead of dishing out the funds for individual gifts for
each family member a game or a puzzle is a great alternative that
they can all enjoy together for years to come.
